We’re consistently asked about inexpensive home improvements that can be done without undergoing full remodels or renovations. So, we’re starting a series of blog posts that will offer a variety of suggestions for simple, cost effective changes you can make to your existing home or space.
How to Update Electrical Fixtures
One of the most affordable updates you can take on without hiring a contractor (although we’re always here if you need us) is updating your electrical fixtures. Sceltas Partner, James Arthur, shows you just how to do that in this short video:
Important Tips for Installing Electrical Fixtures
- Make sure your electricity has been turned off for the switch that you are about to change before installing a new fixture. You can purchase an electrical tester from your nearby hardware store for verification that it is off.
- Determine which style outlet you want before entering your hardware store. The number of selections available can be quite overwhelming! There are two main styles to consider. Standard outlets are less costly and do the job. While more expensive, Decora (or decorator style) outlets may complete the style you’re looking for in your room. Remember that your receptacle and cover plate styles must match.
- Don’t forget about your light switches! It’s alright to replace your switches and your electrical outlets. In fact, if you’re updating a room, you probably want to do both so everything matches in your space.

I prefer the white decora style outlets. The old style outlets with two circular pieces is kinda off.
